CHiRPing up for fire safety

With an eye to prevention and safety, Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue is holding its fourth annual CHiRP Day event.

Under CHiRP – Community Home Fire Safety Check – personnel will be going door to door to check for working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. They’ll be inspecting, testing the alarms as needed – free of charge.

But it’s more than that, said community safety officer Whitney Burk, as the interaction reassures people they and their loved ones are “safeguarded against fire and carbon monoxide dangers.”

“We talk to residents about their safety needs,” Burk said in a media release. “I can’t emphasize enough the simplicity, effectiveness and cost-free nature of the CHiRP checks,” noting the visit usually takes 10 to 15 minutes.

CHiRP days are scheduled for Oct. 11 in Wheatley; Oct. 16 in Tilbury; Oct. 18 in Merlin and Oct. 18 in Tupperville, which will be held as an open house. Chatham, Wallaceburg and Ridgetown will be the focus on Oct. 25.

As part of ongoing fire safety, firefighters will be visiting Chatham-Kent schools throughout October, which is Fire Prevention Month, distributing promotional items and educating students on safety.
