Big Brother spots stolen ride, 2 charged

The Automatic Licence Plate Reader on a Chatham-Kent police cruiser did its job about 3:15 a.m. Thursday morning.

An officer on patrol on Haskell Road in the former Tilbury East Township was alerted by the device of a stolen vehicle. Police say the officer spotted the vehicle and notified other officers.

As they worked to co-ordinate a traffic stop, the driver stopped and tried to flee on foot.

That didn’t last long, and he was arrested.

It turns out the man is prohibited from driving and was wanted on a warrant by Windsor Police Service.

While conducting a search of the area, a female passenger was found hiding in a ditch nearby. Upon identification, it was discovered she was on a Conditional Sentence Order and wanted on a warrant by Sarnia Police Service.

A 31-year-old Windsor man was charged with possession of stolen property, driving while prohibited, and dangerous driving.

The 38-year-old Sarnia woman was charged with possession of stolen property and breaching a Conditional Sentence Order.

Both were transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.

A Wallaceburg man faces charges after a leisurely afternoon drive on Wednesday apparently included driving over a curb.

Police say they received a complaint call shortly before 4;30 p.m. of a driver on McNaughton Avenue in Wallaceburg.

Officers located the vehicle and believed the driver to be under the influence of alcohol. He was arrested and transported to police headquarters for testing.

A 40-year-old Wallaceburg man was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding the legal limit.
