Editor: Canada Post’s decision to remove local letter drop-off boxes forces residents to drive, park, and line up at the main post office just to mail a single letter. Framing this service reduction as a “money-saving factor” ignores the fundamental purpose of our public postal service.
Canada Post exists under a statutory mandate to serve the Canadian public. Removing basic infrastructure undermines accessibility, affecting seniors and residents with mobility challenges the hardest, while adding unnecessary friction to standard daily postal services.
This move disrespects both the public who rely on universal service and the dedicated postal workers who bear the brunt of public frustration over management cuts. Reducing public access points is not “modernization;” it is a retreat from basic public service as mandated.
Residents are encouraged to speak up and demand that Canada Post and our elected representatives protect essential local infrastructure before access is eroded even further.
