LETTER: We do give a damn

Editor: As usual I look forward to The Voice every week. I like to read the piece “Our Voice” which I believe is written by the editor.

Chatham is a great place to live and I couldn’t agree more, but it seems lately, they have more to complain about.

I agree with you, Bruce, that growth is good and apartment rents have gone up crazy. I note they are not filling up very quickly and I wonder where all those people are going to work.

But the article that really took my eye was the letter to the editor from Rick Gardiner, “It’s time for people to starting giving a damn.”

He said he had watched dozens of cars swerve around a man lying in the middle of the road on Richmond Street. What he really should have done is call the police to handle him, before he saw dozens of cars pass around him. Now he says he wasn’t sharing the story of how he helped him for praise, or a pat on the back. Why then did he have to mention it? It’s better for police to handle it in the first place.

That brings me to another subject, that an older apartment in Sarnia is getting a “renoviction” notice, and the owner’s name seems to be the same as the one trying to do this at Terrace Forty in Chatham.

If all this isn’t fully looked into, we have a chance of having more people becoming homeless.

“Yes Rick, we do give a damn.” Especially when you read some of these apartments have vacancies. Let the owner move people into them while he fixes them and works around as space allows.

Or if they have to move, then they can come back at the same rent they were paying and the per cent raise as it comes, each year.

Hope all ends well in the end. It needs to.

Ruth Draper
