Editor: As someone who has worked inside Thames Art Gallery and ARTspace and supported our local arts scene for years, I cannot stay silent about the missteps threatening Chatham-Kent’s cultural institutions.
Despite council sending a unanimous message to administration to keep ARTspace open, the gallery has now been locked shut for four weeks. The public is being fed vague claims via communication from councillors (thankfully), about the space being “unsafe” due to “repairs needed” to the doors. Yet, a scheduled show was abruptly cancelled and the gallery sits completely empty – all without genuine communication or a real timeline for re-opening.
It is hard not to feel that staff are simply neglecting the space or delaying its re-opening because they lack the responsibility, drive, or qualified staff to run it properly.
Who is actually being held accountable here? According to the municipality’s own website, the gallery is currently operating without a professional arts curator. This severe lack of specialized leadership is directly causing the drift and decline of our local arts direction.
Without an educated curator advocating for professional standards, management is showing a troubling lack of appreciation for how art spaces must be run. Beyond dancing around council’s explicit mandate on ARTspace, fine art spaces are being repurposed into high-activity children’s play areas.
While accessible family programming is vital, it should never come at the direct expense of our community’s commitment to fine art. We deserve galleries that prioritize meaningful education, elevate public discourse, and grant access to exceptional exhibitions.
We must lift our community up through exceptional art, rather than compromising our cultural standards. The only way forward is to stop making excuses, reopen ARTspace immediately and resume programming; and hire professional, experienced art staff who actually understand how to protect and respect these spaces.
