Monday Chatham-Kent police briefs

Bike dumped, man eventually arrested

It began with someone stealing from a Tilbury store early Saturday morning and ended with a man turning himself into Chatham-Kent police the next day.

About 1:20 a.m., police learned someone stole goods from a store on Queen Street North in Tilbury.

Police obtained a description of the suspect and an officer on patrol spotted someone on a motorcycle matching the description. Police tried to pull over the motorcycle, however the man fled.

A short time later, the motorcycle was found on its side on Middle Line, east of King and Whittle Road. The driver was nowhere to be found.

Through further investigation, at approximately 5:20 a.m., OPP in Essex advised they had made contact with the accused.

Officers confirmed the suspect’s involvement and found that he did not possess a valid motorcycle licence or insurance at the time of the incident.

On Sunday, the man turned himself in to face charges of flight from a peace officer, fail to remain at the scene of an accident, fail to report an accident, driving a vehicle without a proper licence, and operating a vehicle without insurance.

Mischief

What is it with Harvey Street in Chatham? A week after someone wielding an axe tried to get into a house on Harvey, police say there was another attempted break-in recently.

This one took place Friday afternoon. Police say officers attended and saw that the door to the residence had been forced open and the door’s panelling suffered minor damage.

Thanks to surveillance footage, the officers were able to identify their suspect.

A short time later, he was located and arrested.

A 44-year-old Chatham-Kent man is charged with mischief.

Questionable youthful enthusiasm

A quartet of teenagers got off with a warning after it was reported people with flashlights were walking around a vacant commercial building on Raleigh Street in Chatham Friday evening.

Officers attended the area and located four youths, two 17 year olds and two 14 year olds, all from Chatham, near the location.

Through investigation, police determined that no entry had been gained to the building. None of the youths were found to be in possession of flashlights. There was no damage to the property and nothing was reported stolen.

All four teens were cautioned regarding vacant properties and warned not to access them.

Disturbing behaviour

Two people face charges following an altercation at a Grand Avenue West business early Saturday morning.

Police got the call shortly after midnight over a report of an altercations between patrons and staff security on site.

Officers learned staff were trying to escort a man out of the business when the altercation occurred.

As a result, a woman, 21, and a man, 26, both of Chatham, are charged with assault.

Impaired

Swerving all over the road and nearly hitting other vehicles will get you some attention from police.

That was the case Friday night. Police say they received complaints about a vehicle on McNaughton Avenue East changing speeds, swerving across both lanes.

Police located the vehicle on Hedge Maple Path in Chatham. Officers formed reasonable grounds to believe the driver was operating a motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol, police say.

The accused was arrested and transported to Chatham-Kent Police Service Headquarters, where further breath tests were conducted which registered above the legal limit.

A 47-year-old Chatham man is charged with impaired driving.
