One person is dead and another is in custody following a shooting-related death on Walpole Island First Nation (WIFN) on New Year’s Day.

According to an OPP news release, officers were called to Squirrel Island Road just after 8 a.m. following a report of a disturbance involving a firearm. When police arrived, they found a deceased 29-year-old Walpole resident, a victim of apparent gunshot wounds.

One individual was taken into custody without incident, police said, and is slated to appear in court in Sarnia Jan. 7.

The investigation is ongoing under the direction of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch in conjunction with WIFN police, the Lambton OPP crime unit, the Office of the Chief Coroner and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service.

Anyone with information on this matter is asked to contact Lambton OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
