LETTER: Form an encampment oversight committee: reader

Editor: With the recent push to enhance communication around the homeless encampment issue, it’s time to implement protocols that make this real. The one‑way updates on the municipal letstalkchatham-kent.ca website review what’s already happened – they don’t foster genuine dialogue.

Communication is an art – it involves sharing perspectives, then working toward consensus. What we have now is a monologue masquerading as communication, with decisions already made before anyone has a say.

My proposal is we establish an encampment executive committee (EEC) with equal representation from council, residents, business owners and municipal staff.

This committee would examine encampment issues openly, ensuring solutions reflect all stakeholders far better than arbitrary administrative choices rubber‑stamped by council.

A future council meeting will include a major, potentially costly decision: addressing health care at the encampment. Administration appears to have put forward two options.

One is to install a trailer on site – an expensive, seemingly permanent solution that effectively sanctions the encampment.

The other is to use a mobile healthcare unit – far more cost-effective and non‑permanent.

Had the EEC existed, these options – and possibly better alternatives – might’ve emerged during review, saving taxpayers money and preserving flexibility.

I’m also curious: how have health services been handled in previous C-K encampments, and why this rush now?

I don’t underplay the health needs here – many of us struggle to find a family doctor or navigate long hospital waits. Perhaps EEC‑identified savings could direct funds to support these broader health-care challenges.

Given the lack of immediacy (as past encampments have operated without similar facilities), I urge council to abstain from voting until the EEC reviews all options and proposes solutions.

It’s time to reclaim control over how encampment decisions are made. The EEC will ensure decisions are thoughtful, balanced, and grounded in collaborative input – not imposed by unelected entities.

Form the EEC now and defer any encampment‑related decisions until that committee has reviewed all options.

Let’s restore decision‑making to our elected officials – and through collaboration, craft effective, fair, and financially responsible solutions.
