Alleged swarmer arrested
Chatham-Kent police tracked down a teenager who skipped out on his court date following a swarming in Tecumseh Park nearly two years ago.
The charges stemmed from the Oct. 1, 2023 swarming incident in Tecumseh Park where a group of youths approached two men around midnight in the park and ultimately assaulted them, resulting in one man suffering serious injuries.
Suspects were identified and arrests made in the wake of the incident. But not all showed for their respective court dates.
However, on Wednesday morning, police got lucky. They received a report of an unwanted person at a Wedgewood Avenue address. Officers attended and Mr. Swarmer fell into their lap.
Upon arrival, officers located a 14-year-old male youth. It turns out, he was the subject of an arrest warrant due to his failure to attend a scheduled court appearance related to the Tecumseh Park assault.
He was arrested, booked and released to a parent on conditions. He’s got a Sept. 24 court date. Will he show for this one?
A history of theft
It began Aug. 9 and ended two thefts later, police say.
On Aug. 9 in the early morning hours, someone broke into a school on William Street in Chatham.
CCTV footage identified the culprit, police say, and officers tracked him down the next day. The man was charged for break and enter to commit mischief and theft.
When his day in court came, police say he was a no show.
On Wednesday, someone stole an e-bike from a farm on Bloomfield Road.
Shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday, officers spotted the guy who skipped out on court on Queen Street. Guess what police say he was in possession of at the time? Yep, a certain e-bike.
A 29-year-old man of no fixed address is up on additional charges.
