Probes continue in Wheatley

Work has begun on the last leg of the probe into the Wheatley blast site to determine if additional hazardous wells pose a threat to safety.

According to a municipal press release, contractors and municipal staff began moving equipment to the location Sept. 3, following the demolition of affected buildings. The excavation work could take several weeks.

Fire and emergency response crews will be on site to assist in the event of an emergency. Residents are reminded to call 911 immediately if they smell gas.

The work marks the third year Chatham-Kent has been dealing with the aftermath of the explosion that took place Aug. 26, 2021, when dangerous gas surfaced through an old well.
