A Chatham man faces charges following a standoff with police on Wednesday.

It began just after 1 p.m. when Chatham-Kent police responded to a residential panic alarm at a home on McNaughton Avenue East in Chatham.

Officers arrived on scene and spotted a man inside the home armed with a shotgun. At that time, police say that in the interest of public safety, they secured the surrounding area and took cover.

Negotiations were finally successful hours later, and the man surrendered the fire arm to police and left the home.

Police say the man was high on an illegal substance, and it led him to believe there were other people in the home who wanted to cause him harm.

A 55-year-old Chatham man is charged with careless storage of a firearm and possession of a firearm at an unauthorized place.
