Period Promise returns May 28

The annual Period Promise is evolving.

The successful drive-and-drop-off program that collects women’s hygiene materials is morphing into a stay-and-celebrate program.

On May 28, at The Match Eatery, the United Way of Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent is hosting an event from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

This year’s event invites residents, student groups, unions and local businesses to stay and celebrate. Attendees can drop off donations of menstrual hygiene products and enjoy complimentary appetizers, enter to win door prizes, and network with fellow community champions.

“We are incredibly excited to evolve the Period Promise campaign into a high-energy social celebration here in Chatham-Kent,” Lorraine Goddard, CEO of the regional United Way unit, said in a media release. “Period products are among the most requested, but least donated items at our local food banks and shelters. Together, we will break the stigma and making it easier for everyone to play a part in removing this barrier that far too often keeps people from school, work, and community life.”

The event falls on Menstrual Hygiene Day, a Global Day of Action.

All donations collected in Chatham-Kent stay in the community, distributed through United Way initiatives, food banks and other community-based programs.
