ELECTION ’26: Michael Bondy, mayor

Why are you running?

I believe we need new leadership in our community. This term of council has proven to me that a renewed focus on the citizens of Chatham-Kent is necessary. I believe the agenda of the mayor’s office and that of council must be more reflective of the actual concerns of our citizens.

What are the two biggest issues for the next term of council?

Taxes and homelessness.

Taxes have increased over 40 per cent in the last 10 years and are becoming unaffordable. The public, including myself, does not see the value in what we are paying for. As mayor, I would aim to not see any tax increases and possibly a reduction in the tax rate. This could be achieved primarily by re-examining the structure of the corporation and taking a serious look at each department and determine their value. Wages, benefits and pensions are our number one expense. The value is with the front-line workers. They work hard and have a great value.

Homelessness has to be addressed with authority and fairness, for both the taxpayer and the homeless. Encampments have to be policed and laws need to be enforced. Encampments should also never be allowed in residential areas. This is a tough issue, but we have to be firm on keeping our community a safe place to live and raise our children.

What do you hope to achieve if elected?

Council should be unified to deal with the issues facing our community. This can be achieved by setting the agenda to reflect the concerns of all of our citizens, both urban and rural. I would aim to have a local government that listens to our citizens and addresses the concerns brought to us. Communication is the key and I would lead with that as a priority.

What skills and experience do you bring?

I have an Honours Degree in Political Science. I owned and operated a small business for 25 years in C-K which taught me to understand the needs of our local businesses. I have served on council for 16 years.

Are you a fan of Donald Trump? No.
