LETTER: Was the sign-removal effort truly neutral?

Editor: As we approach the municipal election this October, the evolving situation surrounding campaign sign enforcement across Chatham-Kent has turned what began as routine compliance into a matter of genuine community concern.

Just a couple of weeks ago, signs for candidate Michael Bondy significantly outnumbered those for Mayor Canniff, and from our own observations, the ratio felt close to 15 to 1. While such a massive visible presence can indicate a strong support for that candidate, it also increases the likelihood that some signs may well have been placed incorrectly by either mayoral candidate.

Following a week of aggressive sign removals by the municipality, a “remarkable” shift has occurred. The visual landscape has done a 180-degree flip. Interestingly, when driving down Richmond Street in Chatham, one can’t help but notice that properties belonging to the prominent Community Hub investors are now vigorously displaying Mayor Canniff signs.

Compounding this frustration for many onlookers are the reports that while roughly 400 of Bondy’s mayoral signs were swept up in this recent municipal enforcement blitz, signs for various council candidates, placed alongside the Bondy signs, appeared completely untouched by the exercise. Canniff mayoral signs on public-funded property also remained untouched during the blitz.

When bylaws are enforced with such apparent selectivity, it leaves a troubling impression. A number of us in the community cannot help but wonder, if the numbers had been reversed from the start, where if Canniff had 15 signs to every one of the Bondy signs, would this mass removal have occurred with the same intensity?

When enforcement appears to target one mayoral campaign signs, it compromises the level playing field voters expect.

Moving forward, Chatham-Kent deserves absolute transparency and equal accountability for all campaigns.
