LETTER Let’s reconnect Chatham-Kent

Editor: The Obama Foundation is launching the Presidential Centre in June 2026. It’s mission is to inspire, empower and connect people. I know it’s a very huge reach, but it’s got me thinking about our opportunities here in Chatham-Kent.

I support long-term investments such as the Community Hub, waste to energy, etc.

The Hub opportunity will create a public gathering place, housing many Civic Centre services, as well as our museum and library. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank our current council for their foresight and determination to making it happen.

But big investments do cost money. Polarization on need, spending and cost cutting was to be expected. With the upcoming elections this fall, there is a risk that the pendulum (focus) may swing too far towards future cost cutting over investment for growth.

However, the current candidates for the various wards are encouraging – cost allocation and management for sure, but also a clear focus on investment needs, improved communications and public transparency. Fresh ideas from diverse backgrounds.

Just a thought, but when the new council meets, one initial task might be to ask each ward to do a fresh high-level SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) and then share publicly and across council. This will help provide continued focus and support awareness and communication for decision making.

Let’s work together to reconnect Chatham-Kent!
