Great effort on the Great Lakes

Chatham-Kent Coun. Lauren Anderson, middle right, celebrates with other award recipients of Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative awards. Anderson received an Ontario Member of the Year Award.

Efforts by West Kent Coun. Lauren Anderson’s work on a multi-national initiative has earned her an award.

Anderson, Chatham-Kent’s delegate to the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, is a recipient of the initiatives’ Ontario Member of the Year Award.

“The award recognizes members who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to advancing the Cities Initiative’s mission of protecting freshwater resources, strengthening regional economic prosperity, and fostering collaboration across the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence region,” a municipal media release stated.

Staff and the executive committee of the Cities Initiative chose Anderson in recognition of her outstanding service, advocacy, and active participation on behalf of Chatham-Kent and Ontario municipalities.

Anderson has represented the municipality at regional and international meetings focused on freshwater protection, coastal resilience, infrastructure investment, economic development, and cross-border collaboration.

Through her work with the organization, Anderson has helped elevate Chatham-Kent’s voice on issues impacting Great Lakes communities, including water infrastructure, environmental stewardship, shoreline protection, and regional economic opportunities tied to the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence corridor, officials said in the media release.

She has also participated in advocacy efforts with municipal leaders across Canada and the United States and supported initiatives promoting community engagement and environmental action.

“I am deeply honoured to receive this award,” Anderson said in the media release. “The Great Lakes are central to the identity, economy, and future of communities like Chatham-Kent. It has been a privilege to work alongside municipal leaders who are committed to protecting our freshwater resources while building stronger and more resilient communities.”

Mayor Darrin Canniff praised Anderson for her work.

“Councillor Anderson has been a passionate advocate for Chatham-Kent and for the protection of one of our region’s most valuable natural resources,” Canniff said. “Her leadership and dedication have earned the respect of municipal leaders from across the Great Lakes region, and we are incredibly proud to see her recognized with this honour.”

The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative is a binational coalition of municipal and Indigenous government leaders representing more than 425 communities throughout the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River region. The organization works collaboratively to advance environmental sustainability, economic prosperity, and freshwater protection.
