Baby arrives six hours into near year

Kabita Basnet and Anara Dahal hold their new daughter – the first child to be born at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance in 2026. The infant, weighing 6 lb. 2 oz. arrived just before 6 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Chatham-Kent’s New Year’s baby has arrived.

The newborn girl – the first child of Kabita Basnet and Anara Dahal – made her way into the world at 5:53 a.m. Jan. 1.

The baby, whose name had not been chosen as of press time weighed in at 6 lbs. 2 oz., according to her father. She was born at 39 weeks following an induction.

“Mom is doing well and the baby is doing well,” Dahal told The Voice, noting he was feeling “proud and happy and a bit nervous. “You hope everything goes smooth and when everything is OK, you’re happy for that.”

Dahal, who works in the automotive industry immigrated to Chatham-Kent five years ago from Nepal. His wife Basnet followed him two years ago.
