The Kinsmen Club of Chatham is celebrating Elmer the Safety Elephant’s 75th birthday on Oct. 24.
The festivities will take place at Erickson Arena in the Chatham Kinsmen Club room from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Elmer will be there and a birthday cake and hot dogs will be available for the kids. All are welcome.
The first Elmer suit was created here in Chatham in 1951 by George Nuttall, a past president of Chatham Kinsmen, and his wife to help keep our city streets safe from children getting into accidents.
Elmer would be accompanied by the Chatham Kinsmen, Chatham police, fire and EMS to each and every primary school in Chatham every year and has been a staple of child safety ever since.
Since 1951, Elmer has progressed into a more movable and accessible creature and the Chatham Kinsmen promote, sponsor and keep a supply of peanuts for Elmer all these years.
