It was a smashing failure that will cost people thousands of dollars, but ultimately, one person faces five charges of mischief.
Chatham-Kent police say early Thursday morning, someone went in a mischief spree in downtown Chatham, leaving a trail of broken glass in their wake.
It began about 1:15 a.m. when someone saw a man smash the rear window of a vehicle parked on King Street East.
A minute later, police were called to Wellington Street. Someone shattered a bus shelter.
The following minute, it was the door of a property on Wellington Street that fell victim.
Three minutes later, the front window of a Queen Street business was smashed.
And just four minutes after that, police responded to an alarm at a business on King Street West after the front door there had been shattered.
Downtown CCTV footage helped police identify their suspect.
By 1:32 a.m. an arrest had been made.
A 40-year-old man of no fixed address is charged with five counts of mischief.
As a bonus, police learned he was wanted on an outstanding warrant related to theft, possession, fraud, identity theft and unauthorized use of credit cards.
At the time of the police release, police say the man was being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
No word on if the alleged Sir Smashalot will be released in time to “celebrate” Halloween…
