The history of pre-Confederation Treaties between the British Crown and the ancestors of Walpole Island First Nation will be featured in a presentation at the Chatham library Nov. 4.
Led by land claim expert Dean Jacobs, who serves as an adjunct professor of public health at Western University, the talk will showcase how WIFN navigates present-day sovereign realities while asserting Indigenous governance against the backdrop of Truth and Reconciliation.
The discussion will touch on the importance of relationship to the land, how treaties are honoured and the value of meaningful partnerships.
Jacob’s presentation is a highlight of Treaties Recognition Week in Ontario, running from Nov. 2 to Nov. 8. The week was launched in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action to increase Treaty awareness and provide students and the public an opportunity to learn why treaties matter.
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at 120 Queen St. in Chatham. Light refreshments will be served and all are welcome to attend.
