Child struck and killed by train

Chatham-Kent police are only now releasing details on a weekend tragedy that saw a young child hit by a train in Chatham.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, the incident took place on Keil Drive about 1:10 a.m. Emergency responders arrived to discover the child had suffered “critical injuries, police say, and despite lifesaving efforts, the child died.

“Our hearts are broken for the family and loved ones affected by this unimaginable tragedy,” said Sgt. Jason Herder of the Traffic Management Unit, in a media release. “We ask the community to keep them in their thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.”

The identity of the child will not be released to respect the privacy of the family.

Rail traffic in the area was temporarily halted as a precaution.
