Despite the opposition of neighbours, Chatham-Kent council has approved zoning for the Krazy Shed Co. Ltd. in Merlin.
A total of three deputations asking council to turn down the application from the business were presented at a recent meeting, while two were made in support of the bylaw change.
The property in question is located on the west side of Erie Street South in Merlin. It encompasses 7.3 acres of land and is currently vacant. However, councillors heard the lot is often used by townspeople as a public space, including some dumping of trash.
Currently, according to a municipal report, the parcel will be used to store portable sheds awaiting delivery. The bylaw amendment also allows for the development of low-density residential lots in the future.
The land used to be part of the Lake Erie and Detroit River Railway corridor dating back to 1892 but has been out of use since the 1990s.
