Clear that snow and ice, folks

Local residents are being asked to pitch-in to keep sidewalks safe now that winter has finally arrived.

According to a media release from the Municipality of Chatham-Kent, local residents – with the exception of those in downtown business areas – are being asked to pre-treat all sidewalks surrounding their property. Although C-K crews plow all sidewalks in the winter, a municipal bylaw dictates that de-icing is required within 48 hours of a snowfall.

Citizens can assist by clearing snow before it hardens and packs down and they can also chip ice during the day when it is softer and easier to break. Using sand or salt to increase traction and/or melt ice from the sidewalk is also recommended.

The public works department is currently monitoring weather forecasts, and crews are salting and plowing to keep roads as safe as possible.

Chatham-Kent’s snow plow tracker and frequently asked questions about responding to winter weather can be found at chatham-kent.ca.
