Police across the province are on the hunt for Chatham native Mason Jenkins.
The convicted murderer, 49, walked away from the Collins Bay Institution in Kingston Thursday. He was not present at an 11:15 a.m. check-in at the minimum-security unit at the facility.
Jenkins was convicted of killing his sister in 1998.
Given Jenkins’ connections to Chatham-Kent, local police said they have “taken appropriate precautionary measures and are working closely with partner agencies in support of the investigation.
“The safety of our residents remains our top priority, and we are committed to taking all reasonable steps to support public safety while assisting our policing partners in their efforts to locate and apprehend the individual,” the Chatham-Kent Police Service said in a media release.
Kingston police describe Jenkins 5-9, 255 lbs., with a fair complexion, brown eyes and a shaved head.
He was last seen wearing jeans, a light green jacket and rubber boots, according to police.
