A kitchen fire that started in a stovetop exhaust hood has caused $25,000 damage to a structure on Adelaide Street in Chatham.

According to Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue, firefighters from Stations 1 and 2 responded to the call Wednesday evening to discover a smoke-filled apartment.

After quickly extinguishing the blaze, firefighters also opened up the apartment’s walls and ceilings to see if the fire had spread. They also checked all the other apartments in the building, clearing smoke so tenants could return to the dwelling.

The single occupant, who was home at the time of the fire, was able to exit safely along with her pet cat. There were no injuries.

Chatham-Kent Victim Services and PAWR animal rescue are working on housing the woman and her cat until she can safely return to the apartment.
