DNA evidence leads to robbery charge

DNA testing for police in real life is not quite as convenient as it appears on police dramas on television. With that said, it still leads to charges. Just ask a 29-year-old Chatham-Kent man.

Chatham-Kent police arrested him on Sunday in connection of a crime back in October.

On Oct. 20, police responded to a business on King Street West in Chatham for a robbery investigation.

Police learned a man entered the store and demanded money. After receiving some cash, he left the store and discarded his clothes, including a scarf, gloves, and a wig. With the assistance of surveillance footage, police could track the man’s path and seized the discarded items for forensic examination.

On Jan. 18, police received information from the Centre of Forensic Sciences stating that a DNA profile was generated and matched a local man.

Eleven days later, on Sunday, police located their suspect.

A 29-year-old Chatham-Kent man was charged with robbery and held for a bail hearing.

Assault charges

A domestic dispute in Wallaceburg late Sunday afternoon led to an arrest.

Police were called to Greenbriar Trail in Wallaceburg about 5 p.m. Sunday.

Through investigation, police learned the man and the woman’s son were verbally arguing. When the woman intervened, the man grabbed her and pushed her, causing her to fall backwards into a wall, police say. The woman and the children left the residence.

A no-show in court

Shortly before 1 a.m. Monday, an officer on patrol spotted a familiar face on Adelaide Street in Chatham; a woman he recognized from previous encounters.

The officer confirmed that the woman was wanted on an outstanding warrant, and she was arrested. The woman was wanted for failing to attend court in relation to a theft investigation.

A 22-year-old Chatham-Kent woman was arrested and released with a new court date. Will she show to that one? Stay tuned.
