Editor: A recent paid third-party advertisement in The Chatham Voice (“You can’t represent a municipality from an empty chair,” in the Oct. 15 Voice) attempts to mislead voters by selectively focusing on committee attendance while ignoring the council meeting venue where municipal decision making actually takes place.
It is vital that Chatham-Kent residents have the full picture rather than selective framing designed to weaken a candidate.
Michael Bondy’s official attendance record at the Chatham-Kent council meetings stands at 97 per cent, higher than that of incumbent Mayor Darren Canniff.
Council meetings are where municipal bylaws are passed, multi-million-dollar budgets are debated, and binding votes are recorded.
Attempting to judge a representative’s commitment while ignoring their near-perfect record where it counts most is a clear omission of facts.
Effective municipal leadership requires rigorous, hands-on executive oversight. The role of mayor demands daily attention to reviewing municipal divisions, managing departmental budgets, and overseeing complex capital project issues. With the incumbent mayor’s well-documented schedule of constant photo opportunities and promotional appearances, residents could question how effectively the day-to-day administrative management of Chatham-Kent is being handled inside his office.
Voters deserve a true and honest debate on fiscal management, infrastructure accountability, and governance, not third-party distraction tactics that cherry pick committee stats while ignoring official council records.
