Mere hours after someone stole about two feet of copper downspout and lightning rod cable from St. Joseph’s Church in Chatham, police made an arrest.

The thief did about $600 in damage to steal the small amount of copper, police say.

The cops attended the church Monday morning to investigate, and placed a 41-year-old Chatham man under arrest shortly after noon. He’s facing theft, possession of stolen property and mischief charges.

It wasn’t the only effort to steal some form of wiring, as police caught a guy in the act last night.

Just before 8 p.m., police received a complaint from staff at the variety store on Vanier Drive. They arrived to find a man attempting to steal a hydro wire attached to the building.

A 39-year-old man of no fixed address is charged with mischief.
