Nine Chatham-Kent families grew a little bit bigger Friday as Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) had a mass adoption of nine mixed lab puppies.

A little over six weeks ago, a Moraviantown-area female gave birth to a litter of 11 puppies but died in the process, as did one of her pups.

“Someone came in and was buying supplies at PetSmart when my vice president Paula Ready was there,” said PAWR president Myriam Armstrong,

“Paula told the woman taking care of that many puppies was a lot of work and said we could take them. One puppy died the first night so we had nine.”

When the dogs came in, workers at PetSmart helped with their first feeding.

“We didn’t know exactly when the mom died but the puppies had dirt in their mouths from looking for food. They got cleaned up and had their first meal.”

Armstrong took four to her shelter and Noah’s Ark Pet Boarding took five.

“They were like little prunes, they were so dehydrated,” Armstrong said. “For the first little while we had to feed them every two hours.”

The story of the six females and three males attracted attention and PAWR had more than enough potential adoptees.

“We didn’t even have to put them on our Webpage,” she said. “We screened the families and away we went.”

PetSmart was a scene of chaos Friday as families arrived to get their six-week old puppies that has been vaccinated and implanted with microchips to help if they get lost.

“PetSmart gave us a great deal on puppy food so everyone got started out right,” Armstrong said.

“I’ll miss them but they’re going to great homes,” she said. “And I’ll get some more sleep.”
