Grace Christian Reformed Church was the scene of an amazing leap of faith when it sought guidance for its new 6,700-square-foot fellowship hall on Tweedsmuir Avenue in Chatham.

Council chair Henry Taekema said the topic of the addition was discussed in a service in March of 2013.

“The idea has been the subject of discussion and prayer and that day we prayed about it again,” he said. “At the end of the service there were pledges for $1.2 million.”

He said it was a deeply moving moment for the 500-member congregation.

“We knew that it would take a major commitment from those present to make this happen. With God’s guidance we decided to move ahead.”

The fruits of that decision will be unveiled Saturday as the church hosts an open house from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. to allow members of the community to view the recently completed facility which ended up costing $1.6 million.

“We want to share our experience with our immediate neighbours and the community at large,” he said. “Part of our faith is going out into the world.”

The addition has a fellowship room with seating for approximately 200 persons as well as a kitchen to allow the church to host a variety of functions.

The church will celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.
