It took nearly two days, but Chatham-Kent police got their suspect.

An officer on patrol Saturday morning saw a vehicle speeding south on Third Street about 7:15 a.m. Saturday. Police say the driver went through a red light, made several sharp turns, bounced off curbs and even drove onto the sidewalk at one point.

The officer caught up to the man, after he sped through a stop sign, and tried to make a traffic stop, but the man escaped.

The driver finally pulled into a driveway on Lorne Avenue, got out of the car and fled on foot. Police say the officer recognized the driver. Through investigation, the officer learned the licence plates on the car were stolen, the cup holder in the car had an open can of beer, and the man was prohibited from driving due to unpaid fines and for remedial reasons.

About 5 a.m. this morning, police tracked the suspect down on Blythewood Crescent.

A 27-year-old Chatham man faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight while being pursued by a peace officer, two counts of driving while under suspension, care and control of a motor vehicle with open liquor, and possession of property obtained by crime.
