In an effort to raise awareness about a new illicit drug hitting the streets of Chatham-Kent, R.O.C.K. Missions is co-hosting an awareness meeting this month.

R.O.C.K., in conjunction with Peer-2-Peer will run a street drug information session Nov. 22 on the drug xylazine.

The session takes place between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. in Studio One at the Cultural Centre.

According to the groups, xylazine, which is also known as tranq, is a non-opioid veterinary tranquilizer and it is not approved for use in humans.

The drug can cause heavy sedation, according to R.O.C.K.’s Renee Geniole.

Because it is not an opioid, Narcan and Naloxone have no effect to counter it.

Geniole is encouraging anyone in the community to attend and learn, but especially people who support/respond to substance users and abusers, health-care workers, pharmacists, first responders, and outreach teams.

Tickets to this event are free or by donation, and are available online at: tinyurl.com/whatisxylazine.
