On Sunday evening, a weekend stroll by a local man led to weapons charges.

Chatham-Kent police say they got a call of a man walking on King Street West in Chatham with what appeared to be a rifle.

Officers were dispatched and they located the man on the Fifth Street Bridge. Police say they arrested the fellow, but not before he tossed the firearm into the Thames River,

While transporting the man to police headquarters, the man uttered comments to cause harm to the officer, police say.

Through investigation, police learned the man was bound by conditions of a release order and several prohibition orders not to possess any weapons, including imitation firearms.

A 28-year-old Chatham-Kent man was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm, uttering threats, failing to comply with a release order and four counts of possessing a weapon contrary to a prohibition order.

He has been held pending a bail hearing.
