A provincial hazmat team is now on the scene in Wheatley investigating the source of a hydrogen sulphide leak in that community.
The team, according to Chatham-Kent Fire officials, is working with local emergency services personnel.
“The provincial hazmat team is currently on scene continuing to survey the conditions,” C-K Fire Chief Chris Case said in a media release. “We are working with our local and provincial partners to try and keep disruption to a minimum but continuing to keep community safety as our highest priority.”
Firefighters from stations across the municipality have been on the scene, rotating in shifts at the site of the leak, which was first noticed Wednesday afternoon in the West Kent community.
The leak of hydrogen sulphide forced the evacuation of 27 individuals living in the area and the closure of a number of businesses.
Case said previously that the gas is consistent with a leak coming from a well, however, that has not been determined.
Mayor Darrin Canniff declared a state of emergency Thursday that remains In effect.
The public is being asked to avoid the area.
