Theft of watermelons in Chatham leads to charges

An observant citizen observed a man at Sarah’s Farm Market, Sandy’s St., steal a wheelbarrow full of watermelons, Sunday morning.

A description of the man was provided to police.  Just before 8:00 a.m. officers located the man on Richmond St., still in possession of the wheelbarrow and six watermelons.

Dakota Gross, 22 years, of Emma St. in Chatham was arrested and charged with theft under $5000 and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000.

He was released pending a future court date of Sept. 2, 2020.

Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Traffic Initiative

As part of CK Police Service’s commitment to road safety, the traffic unit partnered with the Ministry of Transportation Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Officers to examine the road worthiness of commercial motor vehicles travelling locally.  Last week, during the two-day initiative, officers conducted the following investigations:

Commercial Motor Vehicles Inspected – 55

Commercial Motor Vehicles taken out of service as a result of the above Inspections – 46

Licence Plates seized due to Unsafe Conditions – 2

Tickets issued as a result of the Inspections – 36

Tickets for non-inspection related stops – 25

“The Chatham-Kent Police said education and enforcement of the various traffic laws to encourage safe road use by everyone is a priority for officers.

Shoplifting  in Chatham

Sunday afternoon, a man attended Shopper’s Drug Mart on Queen St., Chatham, and stole a bottle of cologne, valued at approximately $20.  Officers located the man a short time later and he was arrested.

Nathan Killins, 42 years, of McNaughton Ave., Chatham, was charged with theft under $5000 and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000.

He was released pending a future court date of Sept. 22, 2020.  The property was recovered and returned to the store.

During the same time, a woman attended Rexall Pharmacy on St. Clair St. and stole a pair of earbuds, valued at approximately $40.  Officers located the woman down the street and she was arrested.

Tawnya Gold, 37 years, of Camden St., Dresden, was charged with theft under $5000 and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000.

She was released pending a future court date of Sept. 22, 2020.  The property was recovered and returned to the store.

Later Sunday night, police responded to a shoplifting complaint at Walmart.  Officers located the man near St. Clair Estates and he was arrested.

Ryan Allely, 22 years, of Sheldon Ave., in Chatham was charged with theft under $5000 and being in possession of property obtained by a crime under $5000.

He was released pending a future court date of Aug. 14, 2020.

Pair charged following domestic dispute                                         

On Sunday night, police responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Wallaceburg.

Through investigation, police learned that a verbal argument escalated into a physical altercation.

The 40-year-old Wallaceburg man was arrested and charged with assault and failing to comply with his release conditions by communicating with his ex-wife.  He was released pending a future court date of August 14, 2020.

The 34-year-old Sarnia woman was arrested and charged with assault and facilitating a breach.  She was released pending a future court date of Aug. 14, 2020.

Police located a woman in the company of a man, with whom was on conditions not to communicate with her.

On Sunday night, the 18-year-old Chatham woman was arrested and charged with facilitating a breach.  She was released pending a future court date of Aug. 18, 2020.

The 21-year-old Raleigh Township man was arrested and charged with failing to comply with his release conditions.  He was released pending a future court date of Sept. 8, 2020.

Man charged with uttering threats

Early Monday morning, police responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Bothwell.

Through investigation, police learned that a verbal argument escalated into a physical altercation.

The 33-year-old Bothwell man was arrested and charged with assault and uttering threats.

He has been held in custody pending a bail hearing.
