As the long weekend approaches, so too does a chance for a nasty thunderstorm.

This from Environment Canada:

Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for:

  • Chatham-Kent – Rondeau Park

At 2:29 p.m. EDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing strong wind gusts, pea to dime size hail and torrential rain.

Radar indicates a slow moving thunderstorm just north and west of Chatham. This stationary thunderstorm has likely produced 50 mm of rain so far and may produce another 25 to 50 mm in the next hour.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued when imminent or occurring thunderstorms are likely to produce or are producing one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@canada.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm.
