A Chatham man is facing drug trafficking charges after being arrested for his licence plates.

Yesterday morning at 8:30 a.m., an officer on general patrol was parked in a parking lot on Payne Street in Chatham when a man driving a grey van pulled in.  The officer queried the license plates and learned that they were unattached.  The officer approached the vehicle and arrested the man for using plates not authorized for the vehicle.

When searched, the man was found to be in possession of cocaine.  Approximately 53 grams of cocaine was seized from him with a street value estimated at $5,300.

The 38-year-old Chatham man was additionally charged with being in possession of a controlled substance for the purposes of trafficking.  He was transported to the court house pending a bail hearing.
