A Chatham man face charges after police started receiving reports in mid-January that someone was passing themselves off as a police officer.

On Jan. 14, police say a Wallaceburg couple complained that they purchased a set of speakers from an online ad, and when they met with the man to buy them, the man presented himself as a police officer, wearing a law-enforcement-style jacket, complete with shoulder flashes.

The next day, police received another complaint. A week earlier, a man tried to sell speakers to a local business. The complainant said the man was also wearing a law-enforcement-style jacket.

Police believe it was the same man in both cases.

Eventually, police discovered the man’s identity and searched their suspect’s home, finding the jacket.

A 46-year-old Chatham man is charged with personating a peace officer.
