Chatham-Kent police have arrested a person in connection with a fire on Park Street.
The fire took place at a vacant home July 14.
The fire started at the rear of a vacant residence and quickly spread to two neighbouring properties. Police say one of the neighbouring homes was occupied at the time by four residents who were asleep when the fire spread to their residence. All occupants were able to safely evacuate without injury.
As part of the investigation, officers obtained and reviewed surveillance video. The footage captured a female observed on the property prior to the fire, including in the area where the fire is believed to have originated. Additional video evidence showed the same individual on the property earlier that morning.
The investigation was conducted in partnership with the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office. Investigators determined that the fire was intentionally set.
Through the review of surveillance footage, witness statements, and additional investigative steps, police identified a suspect. Investigators further linked the suspect to clothing and personal property observed in video footage recorded on multiple occasions.
On Thursday, police located their suspect and made an arrest.
At that time, police say officers recovered several items believed to be relevant to the investigation.
A 35-year-old Chatham woman is charged with arson, damage to property; and arson, disregard for human life.
