Chatham-Kent Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers were kept busy this long weekend of August 1, 2014, until August 4, 2014, reinforcing the importance of Ontario’s Move Over Law.
In addition to their regular patrols, calls for service and enforcement, Chatham-Kent OPP officers laid a total of 56 charges for Fail To Move Over For Emergency Vehicle, rather than the original number of charges reported of 26.
When added to the 33 charges laid by Chatham-Kent OPP under Section 159, from January to June 2014, the total surpasses the 47 total charges laid in 2013.
After 10 years of education efforts, the increase suggests a lack of awareness and understanding of the Move Over Law by drivers. It is the responsibility of all licensed motorists to understand and obey the requirements of the Highway Traffic Act.
Chatham-Kent OPP will continue in its efforts to improve awareness of this important law through education and enforcement.
