Classic cars and classic kids are turning heads at John McGregor Secondary School.
That’s thanks to the second annual JMSS RetroFest – a mini rendition of Chatham-Kent’s vintage car celebration to be held May 22 and 23.
The John McGregor version featured 52 vehicles, ranging from old school trucks to souped-up racing machines. Held April 23, the festivities also featured live music, art, popcorn and a costume contest celebrating cool looks from the past.
For the second year running, Grade 10 student Solomon Prince took first prize. He went as the singer Prince, resplendent in lace and a purple topcoat. J.J. Truong and Annabel Belanger were also costume contest winners.
The idea to hold the car show was cooked up by Downtown Chatham BIA executive director Katie Goulet and JMSS teacher Jen McQuade. Their original idea was to showcase student art downtown in an attempt to attract young volunteers to work at Chatham-Kent’s RetroFest.
According to Goulet, enthusiasm for the mini festival is growing.
“It’s getting bigger and better,” Goulet added. “We’re bringing in more students and we had 300 elementary school students attend this year. Enthusiasm for the show is growing.”
Teacher Ken Gall, who organized the car portion of the show, said members of Kent Historic Auto Club display their vehicles, but others comes out as well.
“It’s really becoming a community event,” Gall said.
Anyone who wishes to volunteer with the upcoming Chatham-Kent RetroFest event May 22-23 in invited to email info@downtownchathambia.com. High school students looking to complete their volunteer hours are welcome.
