Anger issues lead to charges

Spitting on a cop has led to charges against a local man.

Police were called Saturday morning about 7:30 a.m. over a report of an unwanted individual on King Street West in Chatham.

Officers spoke with a man who had been standing in the area for an extended period and had previously been asked to leave. The man refused to comply and was issued a Provincial Offence Notice for trespassing.

Despite being directed to leave, he continued to refuse and became disruptive, police say.

He took it one step further, however, when he approached a police cruiser and spat at the officer seated inside.

A 46-year-old Chatham-Kent man is charged with assaulting a peace officer.

Bitcoin scam

Chatham-Kent police urge people to be cautious of online interactions revolving around requests for cash.

They point to a recent victim of a scam. A Orford Township woman, 70, was contacted by a man she met on social media. He claimed to be coming back from a military contract and asked for money, promising to pay her back with a larger amount, police say.

She sent funds through Bitcoin. But he then cut off contact.

The woman contacted police and they are investigating.

Dangerous driving

A Chatham man faces dangerous and impaired driving charges following an incident Friday night.

Police were called about 8:45 p.m. over a report of a vehicle driving erratically in a local business parking lot and the surrounding area in Chatham.

Officers tracked down the vehicle in question on St. Clair Road near Pine Line north of Chatham. Police say the driver was impaired.

A 35-year-old Chatham man is charged with dangerous driving and impaired driving.
