Safety expo for kids

Local youngsters and their families are being invited to attend a Children’s Safety Expo Sept. 12.

Put on by Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers, the free event will showcase community safety through fun, hands-on activities; educational displays and emergency services demonstrations.

C-K Crime Stoppers co-ordinator Erica McIntosh said the event is aimed at raising awareness around safety.

“We are very excited for this year’s Children’s Safety Expo as it is a great opportunity for families to come out and learn about ways to stay safe at home, at school, and in the community,” McIntosh said in a media release. “Though live demonstrations, hands-on activities, and conversations with local first responders and safety professionals, children and parents will gain practical knowledge and confidence to help keep themselves and their communities safe.”

A kid’s fingerprinting clinic to provide families with a free digital child identification record will also be featured.

“The fingerprint clinic provides the digital record that families can keep and it’s important for people to know that Crime Stoppers or the police do not store any personal information or keep any of the fingerprint records from this event. This is entirely for parents to have available with them should they ever need it.”

A free children’s car seat clinic will also be featured for the first 12 registrants, provided by technicians from the Moraviantown Police. This includes an inspection and installation tips, for the first 12 families that register.

In addition to live demonstrations, such as a vehicle Jaws of Life rescue, a host of local agencies, including emergency services, will be on hand to answer questions.

The expo will be held at St. Clair College Chatham Campus from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The college is located at 1001 Grand Ave. W. in Chatham. For more information or to register for the car seat clinic, visit ckcrimestoppers.ca.
