Fall election sees 100-plus candidates

All names are in. And out.

The deadline for municipal and school board candidates to file their nomination papers for this fall’s municipal election has passed.

The final day was a whirlwind, according to municipal officials, as three candidates withdrew, while five ‘new’ ones came forward.

All told, we have 104 candidates signed up. Of that tally, 18 are running for various school board seats. The remainder, 86, are battling for 15 seats at the Chatham-Kent council table, including seven signed up to run for mayor.

Coming in just under the wire are a number of candidates.

Included in the mix is April Colby, who announced she is running for mayor.

Dave Palmer, Bonny Pigeon and Marc Westerman joined the race in Chatham Ward 6.

Penelope Duschesne, Rick Hottot and Jonathan Meriano filed their papers to run in Chatham Ward 7. They are among 17 people vying for two seats.

Bruce Caldwell is running in Chatham Ward 8, while Debbie Martin withdrew.

Four years after incumbents Carmen McGregor and Aaron Hall were acclaimed in Wallaceburg, there are now 14 candidates running, after Hall and McGregor announced they would not seek re-election. The latest to join the fray are Victoria Stewart and Bill Wolsing.

Allen Sparks signed up to run for the Lambton Kent District School Board Aug. 19, but withdrew two days later.

Jacqueline Sparks put her name to run for a trustee spot on the St. Clair board, representing Ward 3.
