Variety is the spice of Flex Plex life

Sophia Poulin, 1, has her own take on World Cup mania while playing at the CK Flex Plex recently. The facility offers a variety of programs, including Toddler Playtime for kids aged one to four.

Versatility is the key word for the CK Flex Plex.

It went from concept last November to open for business in February, and owner Phil Ong has continued to improve things at the Richmond Street indoor sports facility.

What Ong and his team have developed is an indoor, air-conditioned space that offers eight pickleball/badminton courts, six volleyball courts, a half-court for basketball, a trio of ping pong tables and an indoor soccer pitch.

Well, that pitch is also an indoor playground for the youngsters, as three mornings a week, parents and their young children can jump, dance, play, and generally wear themselves, and their caregiver out.

“Everyone enjoys it here,” Ong said. “It looks very unassuming from the outside, but when you get inside, it’s nice, bright and beautiful.”

From the exterior, the appearance is one of an industrial building. However, the inside space is well lit and geared for fun.

That includes indoor summer camps for kids and youth, not a bad idea given the recent extreme heat we experienced.

“We’ve started a lot of kids’ and youth programs throughout the summer,” Ong said. “In the fall, we’ll pick up with a lot more clinics for youth and adults.”

Ong said he likes the progress at the Flex Plex.

“It’s coming along nicely. We’re very proud of the facility we built and have received a lot of good feedback from the community that it’s a good space for them to keep active,” he said. “We’re open for anyone from age one to 99. We have something for everyone.”

Adult leagues include badminton, pickleball, and soccer. Adult competitive tournaments in various sports are sprinkled throughout the year.

Youth programs feature soccer, badminton and volleyball clinics, as well as a drop-in night.

Toddlers and their parents, as mentioned, take over the place on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.

As well, the summer camps are underway for children aged five to 11 from now until late August.

The Flex Plexers really try to have something for everyone. But they also have everything for everyone, in the form of their multi-sport league on Thursdays. Each week delivers a different sport.
