A former Chatham-Kent police officer faces charges following an investigation by the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
SIU officials said the charges are related complaints of sexual assault that reportedly occurred in 2009.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service (CKPS) contacted the SIU last September after a woman came forward to report historic incidents that occurred while she was a minor and involved an on-duty constable, according to an SIU media release.
The SIU conducted its investigation into the matter and Joseph Martino, director of the SIU, had reasonable grounds to approve the arrest and charges, officials said.
Ken Miller, who retired from the CKPS in 2018, is charged with sexual assault, sexual exploitation and breach of trust.
Miller’s next court date is May 19 in Chatham.
“The Chatham-Kent Police Service recognizes the sensitive nature of these allegations and acknowledges the impact such matters can have on survivors and the community,” local police said in a media release. “We remain committed to accountability, transparency and maintaining the trust and confidence of the community we serve.”
As the matter is before the courts, neither the CKPS or the SIU will be providing additional details.
