Home composters available

Mother Earth is getting a boost locally, thanks to Chatham-Kent’s new Backyard Composter Program.

Part of the first phase of the municipality’ Organic Waste Diversion Program, the effort supports at-home composting by diverting waste from landfill by managing food scraps and yard waste at home.

To help achieve the goal, the municipality is selling composters for $20 apiece (including HST.) They can be purchased in person at municipal services or over the phone for later pickup by calling 519-360-1998.

Sites where composters are available include Chatham-Kent Civic Centre; Blenheim Municipal Office; Dresden Municipal Office; Ridgetown Municipal Office; Tilbury Municipal Office; and the Wallaceburg Municipal Office.

Quantities at each location are limited and subject to availability.

According to a municipal media release, the composter launch is the first step in the Organic Waste Diversion Program adopted by council in 2025. The second phase will include a standardized curbside leaf and yard waste collection program in 2027, to be followed by a depot food waste digester pilot in 2028.
