Flipping bags of corn through holes brought nearly $77,000 to Chatham-Kent Hospice, and smiles to the faces of participants at the recent third annual Cornhole for Hospice event.

The Feb. 21 endeavor saw $76,574 raised to support residential hospice care, care co-ordination as well as grief and bereavement support to people across Chatham-Kent.

The event brought players of all skill levels together at the John D. Bradley Convention Centre for a full day of fun, competition, and charitable giving. After round-robin play, 50 two-person teams advanced to double-elimination brackets.

In the Best of the Best division, Larry McKinney and Chad Grant of CF Industries claimed the top spot, earning the championship trophy and a $500 cash prize. In the Best of the Rest bracket, Jay Charette and Bobby Pickering of Shuck Dynasty secured the $250 prize.

“We are so grateful for all of the teams who came out to support this event, as well as all of the donors and sponsors who made Cornhole for Hospice such a success,” said Brock McGregor executive director of the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation, in a media release. “The community support we receive is fundamental to continuing to provide compassionate end-of-life care at no cost in Chatham-Kent.”

Darryl Lucio and Tyler Lucio of the local cornhole league, CK Dirty Birds, loaned their cornhole boards and expertise for the event.
