Surrender via cell phone

What began as a routine traffic stop in Wallaceburg Tuesday night ended as anything but routine.

Officers pulled over a vehicle on McNaughton Avenue for a Highway Traffic Act Violation. Except the driver refused to get out of his vehicle or even identify himself.

Police managed to ID the driver and realized he was supposed to be under house arrest in Leamington. He was also wanted by the Ontario Provincial Police in Essex, Windsor and London.

Following negotiations by phone, police say the man surrendered. A search yielded a switchblade, methamphetamine, cocaine and cash.

A 43-year-old Leamington man is charged with…

  • flight from police;
  • obstructing police;
  • two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking;
  • possession of stolen property;
  • possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • three counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition contrary to a probation order;
  • failing to comply with a probation order; and
  • driving while under suspension.
