Hitting the gas instead of the brake landed a vehicle in the drink Thursday evening and left two women waterlogged.
Police say the women went into the channel in Erieau off Mariners Road last night when the driver accidentally stepped on the gas rather than the brake. The car launched into the channel and eventually sank in 20-feet of water.
The women, aged 20 and 18, escaped through the windshield, which broke when the vehicle slammed into the channel, police say.
After paddling around in the dark for about four minutes, they found a ladder and clambered back onto dry land.
The two went to a nearby home where they asked for assistance.
The harbour master and federal officials were notified of the submerged vehicle.
